WrestlePosium I: Douglas Edwards

9:00-9:20: “Plato with Piledrivers: How pro wrestling can help us understand philosophy”

Douglas Edwards is Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Utica College.

What does pro wrestling have to do with philosophy? Everything! Or so I suggest. After tracing analogies made between philosophy and amateur wrestling in Ancient Greece, I argue that pro wrestling, with its emphasis on cooperation over combat, is a much better model for philosophical investigation. I go on to discuss how philosophers have gimmicks, just like pro wrestlers do, and consider what the relationship is between a philosopher and her views. If you want to learn more about philosophy, come on down to ringside! If you already know some philosophy, get ready, as Socrates has a lot more in common with The Rock than you might think.
